swordThe year 2004 was a very important year in Wales; it was the 600th anniversary of the establishment of Owain Glyndŵr’s Parliament at Machynlleth as well as the 600th anniversary of his crowning ceremony as Prince of Wales in the same town. As an important part of the commemoration and celebrations of 1404 – 2004, Llysgenhadaeth Glyndŵr presented the people of Machynlleth and Bro Ddyfi with Cleddyf y Genedl – the Sword of the Nation a magnificent hand made sword that had been commissioned especially for the occasion.sword2

Cleddyf y Genedl has been designed on the style of sword that was presented to Prince Owain Glyndŵr on his coronation in 1404 by the King of France. Cleddyf y Genedl was then hand made in the traditional medieval method by Jason Gardiner, the world renowned blacksmith from Ystradgynlais.

The original Cleddyf y Genedl was delivered to the safe keeping of Machynlleth Town Council by Madame Claude Rapport, the Honary French Consul during the ‘Juratus Oweyn’ Celebrations in June 2004and will soon be on exhibit at the Senedd-dŷ at Machynlleth. There is, however, a striking replica of this sword on exhibition at Cefn Caer.
